چکیده

Abstract Kabocha squash, Cucurbita maxima Duchesne, in delayed-start culture is one of the major cultivation systems southwestern Japan. Honeybee introduction or hand-pollination has been practiced this crop system, but species composition, abundance, and pollination efficiency pollinators remain unclear. In current study, we investigated which insect(s) accomplish kabocha squash. Among total visitations to female flowers, honeybees, mostly Apis mellifera L. (Hymenoptera: Apidae), dominated at 94.4% 85.3% experimental field 2019 2020, respectively, followed by bumblebee Bombus diversus Smith Apidae) hummingbird hawkmoth Macroglossum pyrrhosticta Butler (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae). The number pollen grains on body surface B. individuals was significantly greater than that such a single visit deposited 5–6 times more stigma honeybee visit, meaning efficient pollinator individual level. However, numerous honeybees compensated for their lower resulted fruit set. addition, report first time lepidopteran can pollinate squash: our data indicate several visits M. were likely exceed estimated minimum required Our survey three private farms revealed far set stigmas wild wintering honeybees. These findings squash production region practicable without enhancement effort, as hand-pollination.

Morphological, Thermal and Physicochemical Properties of Starches from Squash (Cucurbita maxima) and Pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata)

The properties of starches isolated from two squash cultivars (Cucurbita maxima) were studied and compared with those of two pumpkin cultivars (Cucurbita moschata) and one normal potato cultivar. The amylose content of pumpkin and squash starches ranged from 16.18% to 21.29%. The pumpkin and squash starches appeared as a mixture of spherical, polyhedral and dome shaped granules. The pumpkin and...
